3thought was honored to again have the opportunity to create the event identity for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund’s premier annual event. Every year, the visuals of “A Night to Remember” get re-invented to mirror the interests and personality of the honorees. The 2011 Honorees, Lisa and Greg Linn, expressed a desire for the pieces to have a contemporary, artistic feel; be inspired by “jazz;” and remind people that is a really fun-filled evening.

We hit upon the general aesthetic and color palette early, but the final elements took a while to get just right. The final identity was centered around a multi-layered, hand-drawn illustration created by Shea mixed with bold paint splats that were balanced with quiet space and contemporary, clean typefaces. This created an energetic and joyful visual to build all the necessary promotion pieces.

The first was the event poster (shown above), and this doubled as a unique invitation. The invitation was printed on the back side of the poster that was then folded down in 6 panels for mailing. Other components included a response card, envelopes, email save the date, silent auction/event guide brochure, tote bag and souvenir t-shirt (shown below).

The final and most in-depth piece created was the event journal which is an 84-page program book. The book includes organization and event information, as well as advertisements for all event sponsors. Unlike many events where most of the supporters are corporate sponsors, many of these ads are personal messages of support from individuals who know the honorees and organization members. Since the ad content was not coming as finished art from professional marketing departments, layouts had to be built for these special ads that both worked as part of the overall book, but still reflected the the personal nature of each message. The final book consists of a full color cover, black and white editorial pages, and three special 2-color sections for upper level sponsors. You can flip through the complete layout below.

Fresh Meadows Farm approached 3thought in December of 2010. After a few meetings to discuss their growing organic cranberry business (no pun intended), 3thought began the process of creating a logo. Fresh Meadow Farms wanted to position themselves as one of the premier organic cranberry growers in the area and needed a logo that would reflect their heritage and long tradition of growing cranberries.

3thought presented a handful of concepts all exploring different aspects of an “historic” aesthetic. The circle mark selected with its hand drawn, wood cut look resonated with the team. The logo was refined so every perfectly round or straight edge was bent or chiseled to look even more hand wrought. The secondary colors complete a subdued palette with historic undertones. The type is a mix of Celestial Antique with all caps and all small caps.

The Hannah B.G. Shaw Home in Middleboro, MA is one of the nicest Senior Living Communities not only in Massachusetts, but in all of the country. We had worked with the Shaw Home when they redesigned their corporate website last year, and we were thrilled to help when they contacted us about rejuvenating some of their printed materials. Print design is a favorite medium of ours and all parties involved were thrilled with the custom designs we created.

It had been quite some time since they had printed updated brochures for their “Residential” and “Skilled Care” service lines, and they were in need of some major updates to copy, photography and design. The Shaw Home also desired to upgrade the packaging in which their brochures were delivered to potential residents and their families.

After a quick kick-off meeting, we decided it would be best to create two very targeted brochures. The first would be the Residential Care and the second would be for Skilled Care nursing. For the most part these brochures could be very similar in design with basic information repeating on both. The fold over page would be utilized to include unique information relevant to each service line. The brochure covers would also get unique photography to differentiate between the two services. We were able to template 2/3 of the brochure and customize smaller portions of the the brochures, and that allowed the Shaw Home to target very different audiences, have unique designs for each, and save money because each piece didn’t need a full design. Because of this careful planning we were able to save our client time and money.

The interior of the brochures included updated copy and beautiful photography provided by Nute Photography of Plymouth, MA. The brochures were printed on 120# matte text stock by Unigraphic in Woburn, MA and came out looking great.

The final piece of this puzzle was to create a delivery device for these brochures and all the paperwork and forms that goes along with them. We worked with Shaw to create a completely custom 9×12 pocket folder that was branded with the new Shaw Home look and identity, but was simple enough to stand on it’s own and look timeless so as to last a few years.

Overall the entire project went very smooth, and immediately after delivery the Shaw Home called again to upgrade their booth graphics for special events and trade shows they often attend.

Phantom Sports Picks, asked us to get inspired by the lines in luxury automobiles. With a name like Phantom, they were especially fond of the ultra posh Rolls Royce Phantom. Phantom insisted on incorporating the PSP type treatment somewhere in the logo, so we determined that the first P would be inverted for symmetry. We also decided to forego the traditional vertical grille styling of the Phantom and go for something that looked more like wings, or the grille of the equally posh S600 Mercedes Benz. Mix that will clean modern type above and below and voila.

The Frosty Dog on Route 58 in Carver is the newest place on the South Shore for ice cream, food, arcade and family fun. Not only do we happen to work above the Frosty Dog, but we take care of all their design and advertising. Our first assignment as with many new business’ is to develop a logo system. Chuck, the owner, already had the name for the business and the idea of using a friendly puppy with sunglasses. From there it was really up to us to develop a kid-friendly, fun logo.

As we were targeting children and families, it seemed logical to create an appealing dog mascot that could support all kinds of collateral and merchandise. We explored a couple different breeds and a rendered them in various cartoon-like styles.

We presented a few sketches to Chuck, and ultimately, the bulldog spoke to him. The hand-drawn dog was rendered with bold lines and colors, and we refined the typography and composition. The mark works equally well in black & white which will make it very easy to screen print or embroider it on to t-shirts & hats.

We will soon be expanding the identity to a website, but The Frosty Dog is already up on Twitter and Facebook.
