If you’re one of our lucky clients using WordPress as your content management system (CMS), here’s a few FAQs to get you started managing your website.
How do I log into my WordPress dashboard?

Logging into your dashboard is pretty easy. Start by typing your website’s url into the top of your browser  (where you put the www.) then add the suffix “/wp-admin” to the end of your url (no spaces or anything either). Example: If your website it www.3thoughtcreative.com your login page would be www.3thoughtcreative.com/wp-admin. From there just use your username and password (shown to the right). We would have sent that to you when we set up your site. If you need us to resend your user credentials, just give us a ring or email.

How do I add, edit or delete a page on my site?

Once you’ve logged into your site, you’ll be taken to the dashboard. Along the left side of your dashboard is a tab called “Pages“. If you click on “Pages” a list of the pages of your site will appear in the right column. When you hover over the name of any of your pages, the options to “Edit“, “Quick Edit“, “Trash” and “View“. Click the option you’d like. Oh, and if you make changes and want to go back to a previous save, there’s options at the bottom to revert to a previous save.

What’s the difference between a page and a post?

Every site is set up different, so this part can get tricky, but in most cases a page will relate to a static page of your site. Typically these pages will show up in your navigation. Posts are similar to pages, but don’t typically show up in your navigation. Posts are usually one time articles such as a blog post, announcement and in some cases a piece of content on your site. Some times these pieces of content can be galleries, widgets, ads or special features depending on how your site was set up. If you have questions about your site just let us know. How do I add a photos to my post or page?

First you’ll need to determine where you’ll be adding your photo. Create a post or page, or edit an existing. Now place your cursor in your document where you’d like to add your photo and then click on the icon next to “Upload/Insert“. From this window you’ll be able to upload or link to a photo. (Remember it’s “not cool” to steal photos from the internet, and by not cool, we mean illegal) Now a window pops up with options for inserting your image into your post or page. You can choose from options like left, right, centered, justified etc. Click insert and bam! You’ve inserted your photo. To edit that photo just place your cursor over the photo to edit or delete.

How do I monitor my comments?

Some of you have sites that have been designed with the ability to have people comment about a page or post. When you get a comment you’ll be notified first via email. From there you’ll be given the option to “Approve“, “Unapprove“,  “Mark as spam” or “Move to trash“. If you’re already logged in to WordPress and need to edit your comments, click the “Comments” tab from the dashboard.

I can’t find the piece I want to change?

Yes, websites can be confusing. Some pieces of your site are hardcoded into your site and not easily editable. Other parts can be a little more difficult to find but very editable because they are “widgets“. Widgets are like apps you can download to add functionality to your site. Some of you may have google maps or contact form widgets. Each of these widgets has it’s own set of options and a user interface that controls it. It’s not recommended you change the settings we set up for you. If you must change something and you’re not 100% sure, just check with us and we’ll be happy to take a look for you. Some widgets are easier to understand than other. Unlike pages and posts, widgets don’t allow you to go back to a previous save and undo your changes, so be careful.

Of course you do, and we expect you too. If it’s confusing there’s probably someone who thinking the same thing and there’s plenty of help 24 hours a day if you do a quick Google search. If you can’t find help online or have questions specific to your site alone and we’re always available to help.
